The short version. We collect what we need to set you up on good, safe dates. We never sell it, never use it for ads, and never post a public profile. Your match sees your first name, age, program and photos. Your phone number is only shared on the day of a date, and only if you both say yes. Text "delete" to Khio any time and we delete your account.
Who we are
Khio Match is a matchmaking service for students at the University of Alberta, MacEwan University, NAIT, Concordia University of Edmonton, The King's University and NorQuest College, run by Khio ("we", "us") from Edmonton, Alberta. You talk to it by text message. It is not run by, or affiliated with, any of these schools. This policy is written for Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

What we collect
- Your school email, to check that you are a student at one of these schools. We send it a 6 digit code and store only a scrambled (hashed) copy of that code.
- Your phone number, because Khio works over text.
- The basics you tell Khio: first name, birth date (to confirm you are 18 or older; your match sees your age, not the date), gender, who you want to meet, the age range you want, and if you share them, your height and the height you are looking for.
- School details: your year and program.
- Photos you send for your match card.
- What you are like and what you want, in your own words: interests, what you are looking for, the nights you are usually free, and any dealbreakers you mention.
- Your chat with Khio, including your yes or pass on each match, the reasons you give, and how each date went.
- Safety records: reports and blocks you make, or that are made about you.
- Referrals: if a friend's link brought you here, which friend.
- Basic technical data: like any website, our servers see your IP address and browser type. We use it to stop abuse (for example, limits on how many codes one connection can request) and to fix problems.
What we do not collect
- We do not ask for or record your ethnicity or race, and we never match on it.
- We do not ask about religion or politics. If you raise one as a dealbreaker yourself, we keep what you said so we can respect it.
- We do not track your location, read your contacts, or look at your social media.
- We do not ask for government ID.
Why we use it
- To confirm you are an eligible student and 18 or older.
- To find you a match who fits what you asked for, write a short line about why you two fit, and plan the date (a time and a public place).
- To check photos before you can be matched: a real person, face visible, nothing explicit, no minors.
- To keep people safe: handle reports, keep blocked pairs apart, and enforce our community guidelines.
- To learn from your feedback so your next match is better.
- To run and improve the service, and to contact you about your account.
By signing up and texting Khio, you agree to these uses. You can withdraw that consent at any time by deleting your account, which ends the service for you.
What other people see
There are no public profiles. Only the person you are matched with sees your match card: your first name, age, program and year, your photos, and the line about why we matched you. They never see your last name, email, birth date or phone number. On the day of a date, Khio asks you both whether you want to swap numbers so you can find each other. Numbers are shared only if you both say yes.
Who processes it for us
We use a few service providers to run Khio Match. They process your information only to provide their service to us.

Your profile, chat and match history are stored in a database on our own servers. Some of the providers above are based outside Canada, mostly in the United States, so your information may be processed and stored there and may be subject to the laws of those countries. We use paid services that do not train their models on what you send.
We do not sell your information or share it with advertisers. We share it with others only if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety (for example, a credible threat of harm).
How long we keep it
- While your account is open, we keep your profile, photos, chat and match history so Khio can keep setting you up.
- When you delete your account, we delete your profile, photos, signup record and chat with Khio. In your past matches we delete what you wrote: the lines about why you two fit, your feedback and your reasons for passing. A bare record that the match happened stays (who, which week, the time and place, the yes or pass), so the same two people are never matched again, along with any missed-date strike.
- We keep a short safety record after deletion: reports and blocks involving you, and, if your account was on hold after a report, removed for breaking the rules or for missed dates, or blocked by someone, a scrambled (hashed) copy of your school email with the reason and who blocked you. It is how a removed person cannot quietly rejoin, how blocks still apply if you come back, and how we can respond to a safety concern. We keep it only as long as it is needed for that.
- If you started signing up but never texted Khio, we keep your school email and signup record so the same address keeps the same join code. Ask us and we will delete it.
Deleting your account
Text "delete" to Khio any time. You can also email [email protected] from your school email. Want a break instead? Text "pause", and "unpause" when you are ready.
Your rights
Under PIPA you can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, and ask how it has been used and who it was shared with. Email [email protected] and we will answer within 45 days. If you are not happy with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.
Keeping it safe
Our database is not reachable from the internet, access is limited to the people who run Khio, and connections to our site are encrypted. No system is perfect; if a breach puts you at real risk of significant harm, we will tell you and the Commissioner as PIPA requires.
Age
Khio Match is for people 18 and older. If we learn someone under 18 has signed up, we remove the account and its information.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will text you before the change applies. The date at the top always shows the latest version.
